Main Viewing Bridge at Sunwapta Falls

The main viewing bridge at Upper Sunwapta Falls is perched dramatically above a deep, narrow limestone gorge, offering visitors their best vantage point for the waterfall’s raw power and beauty. Just a short paved walk (around 100 m) from the parking area, this sturdy wooden-and-metal bridge crosses the river at its most commanding viewpoint. From here, you can watch the Sunwapta River swirl around a central island before plunging roughly 18.5 m into the rocky chasm.

The bridge is strategically located at the edge of the canyon, framed by towering spruces and the distant alpine peaks of Jasper National Park. Safety railings provide secure spots for everyone to stop and soak in the views or snap unforgettable photos. You can linger to listen to the deafening roar, feel the refreshing spray, and admire the gorge’s sheer walls carved over millennia by relentless glacial melt.

It's a short but unforgettable hike; less than a five-minute stroll, making it accessible for nearly all visitors and perfect for families.

In spring and early summer, the bridge is enveloped in mist as glacial melt turns the falls into a roaring torrent; later in the season, it provides a calmer, serene vista across turquoise waters. The Sunwapta Falls viewing bridge offers a perfect encounter with dramatic waterfalls or tranquil forest ambiance.
