Island in Front of Sunwapta Falls

Just upstream from Sunwapta Falls, a small forested island divides the Sunwapta River into two channels. This natural feature plays a key role in shaping the dramatic twin cascade of the upper falls. As the river approaches the brink, the island forces the flow to split, sending water rushing down both sides with immense power. Trees cling to the island’s rocky surface, offering a striking contrast of green against the surrounding grey limestone and frothy whitewater. During spring and early summer, when glacial meltwater swells the river, the island appears more isolated, almost engulfed by the roaring currents on either side. In drier months, it becomes a tranquil midpoint in the river's journey-an untouched sanctuary suspended above the thunderous drop. From the viewing platform, visitors can clearly see this island standing firm at the very threshold of the falls, adding both beauty and complexity to the landscape.
